Dear Team Berwick

Welcome to season 2021 in what is shaping up to be a dynamic year for the Berwick Football Club. Our new changerooms have been upgraded (including the canteen) and now reflect that of a Premier Division Eastern Football League affiliated club. Our match day lights are due to go up in April / May which could see the odd night game at Edwin Flack. To cap it off we have the largest number of registered players in the clubs history with Seniors, Reserves, 2 x Under 19s teams and most importantly our Senior Womens Team. To say there is a high level of excitement around the club would be an understatement. Squeezing everyone on the ground for training is tough as will be the 120 Thursday night meals……but these are good problems to have.

Pre-season commenced in October and the numbers on the track for both the mens and womens teams has been exceptional. We have recruited well with a mixture of past and new players coming over to the club for 2021. We are well balanced and looking to be competitive in the new league. The coaching staff have also been fantastic keeping the guys up and sharing the load. That is important when you have 60-70 on the track. The coaching appointments for 2021 are.

Clint (Boofa) Evans
Andrew Morozoff
Michael Johnson

Jake McLardy
Chris Kyriacou
Pat Johnson

Justin (Judge) Pearson
Jason Cunningham

Matt De Poilly

The club in its commitment to the juniors coming through the system has also appointed Nathan Harris as Club Development Coach. Nathan comes highly credentialled and is a great development asset to players of all ages as well as the coaching staff.

Practice matches have commenced and the coaching staff have gone out of their way to ensure they take this opportunity to blood the plethora of young kids we have coming through the club. Our senior list that has carried us through this extremely successful period of 5 Grand Finals in a row and 3 Premierships is starting to age and the future is with these kids. Scores are not important, game time is. Having said that our Womens team played their first game together in a practice match against Coldstream. The played brilliantly to kick 18:18 to 0:0. Pretty good effort for a group that only came together in the months before COVID. Matt has done a great job coaching the team and his energy and passion is what ensured this team got off the ground.

A big thank you to our existing sponsors who got back on board this year, even after many suffered at the hands of COVID. Also a big thank you to all the new sponsors who have joined us in 2021. This year we have made a concerted effort to improve our website and social media presence and have recruited some professional help. This is to improve the exposure of our sponsors and also provide better and more frequent updates to our 2,500 followers. For those that follow us you will have seen a big improvement already, for those that don’t please get onto Facebook and Instagram and keep up to date (Don’t worry I will keep sending these updates when I can)

On a more exciting note we have had one of our Executives daughters, Ebony Hughes, sort through the boxes and boxes of the club memorabilia. Its amazing we have so much history available considering the devastating fire at Arch Brown in the 1980s that took a lot with it.   it   I certainly feel old when I say I can remember it happening. Ebony has uncovered some incredible stuff including the fact the BFC was definitely established in 1883 which has been a point of conjecture. More importantly though Ebony discovered several articles from 1910 that confirmed we won the Premiership in that year. An incredible find and amazing we did not know.  When you consider though we have been through 2 world wars and 2 global pandemics since that time I think we can forgive our forefathers for the oversight. As such the committee voted at the February meeting to acknowledge the 1910 Premiership as part of the clubs history.

That’s it for now, memberships are available by contacting so please get on board and support the Mighty Wickers in season 2021 as they play in the Number 1 Community Football competition in the state.
